According to the Groupe Speciale Mobile Association (GSMA) there are now 80 operators in 42 countries investing in VoLTE deployment and trials.

As part of the VoLTE (Voice over LTE) deployment, operators are looking to implement a comprehensive IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem or IP Multimedia Core Network Subsystem) infrastructure within their networks. Once IMS is deployed, operators are then looking at ways of extracting more value from that investment and avenues for recouping some of the capex costs more quickly.

According to Comverse’s Mohan Palat, writing for Telecom Asia, many are turning to RCS (Rich Communication Services) as a natural extension to VoLTE with the GSMA noting more than 40 commercial RCS deployments worldwide.

WebRTC is also further extending the universe of RCS and VoLTE for the internet and altering the way the mobile industry works. Anyone with a web browser can now be part of the RCS/VoLTE universe and that means potentially adding more than three billion devices to the telecoms market in the next couple of years.

This, in turn, has seen the marketplace create blended use cases combining VoLTE, RCS and WebRTC technologies which allow a greater leverage to connect consumers to the Internet of Things (IoT). Consumers can use their regular smartphone to interact with the IoT without having to download an app or plug-in. This is vital for many Asia Pacific countries where the mobile device is the primary internet/communications device.

Mohan writes that the key catalyst for these powerful, but practical use cases, is the telco API which serves as the entry and exit point for a wide range of third-party applications and OTT (over the top) services.
