Telecoms is in transition to a full cloud environment, where rapid deployment, reliability and technology upgrade will become a de facto standard. This opens up a wealth of service possibilities not feasible under more traditional siloed telecoms scenarios.
Older Time Division Multiplex (TDM) technologies used for voice services are now at end of life and are being replaced by more up to date soft switch architectures that use IP derived services and elements. Voice telephony can now be offered as a simple web based application, generically termed as Platform as a Service (PaaS) residing within the Application Layer, more specifically termed by SmartIPX as voice PaaS (vPaaS).
Managed Services refers to the practice of outsourcing day-to-day operational management responsibilities and IT functions as a structural method for optimising operations activity and reducing capex costs, transferring costs to opex. Managed Service Platforms offer customers specific activities that are tangible to their requirements, for example Voice Switching, SMS transit, Fraud Management, Billing, etc. Typically these services now reside inside cloud environments and therefore have ingress and egress requirements that will require interconnection and management disciplines.
