The challenges facing the Telecoms industry in 2017

After a year of surprises, it’s nice to know that some things remain constant. Key takeouts from the Ernst & Young Telecommunications Capital Confidence Barometer highlighted that:

  • 43% of communication companies stated digital technology was priority for the Board Strategy
  • 49% stated that sector convergence and increased competition were biggest disruptors to core business
  • 67% are shifting skills and talents to gain more efficiencies through automation

Quoting Equinix on the Cloud Market – “Enterprises are already using multiple clouds today, and the need to connect more diverse and traditionally divided ecosystems with demanding expectations around performance, user experience and seamless integration will push this trend more aggressively in the coming year.”

We fully agree with the sentiment expressed by Equinix that 2017 will be the tipping point; when the convergence of multiple clouds across the enterprise – data, applications, infrastructure and personal clouds – will fundamentally change the way people and businesses operate.

Fraud continuing to affect margins

Fraud continues to dominate the industry conversation, affecting margins to the detriment of consumers and operators alike. Our Q4 fraud report made it clear that communications service providers cannot afford their attention to waiver, as new fraud destinations come online at all times.

The Festive season brings its own concerns and challenges for a number of partners where our work on VOIP fraud management will bring further dividends, as noted in our recent case study. Here we are increasingly looking to share data and best practice with everyone in the ‘fight it, don’t facilitate it’ battle against fraud.

Employing the right skills in a difficult marketplace

A key discovery from the Ernst & Young report is that over half of all companies surveyed (53%), know they need to hire or acquire more talent to achieve their stated objectives, but this bumps right up against the communications industry specific skills shortages.

Our partners, whether we work for, work with or buy from, have helped us grow through projects in 2016 as diverse from Big Data, Assisted Machine Learning, LTE-A, 5G, Network Function Virtualisation and Policy as a Service all within an ‘opex’ model built to scale. Our own Innovate UK Mobility Experience project working with Surrey University and Tracline enabled the whole business to immerse ourselves in 4G and 5G network knowledge gain which is reflected in major advances using Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and Policy as a Service available over global private APNs in 2017.
